I have noticed a fair amount of watches listed with what looks to me like severe pitting and corrosion around the O ring and case back area on a lot of Datejust’s and Subs. Rolex watches were made out of 316L until 2001 when they switched to 904L. There is no excuse to make a watch out of 304 stainless. 304 is hardware store stainless steel.

Nope, no pitting on a 904L Rolex. The reason why Rolex started using 904L on the Sea Dweller first was due to pitting that occured under the back case (on the outer periphery of the rubber seal) of some watches worn by Comex divers that were working in . Light seemed to reflect oddly off the second hand so I asked the salesperson for a loupe and sure enough there appeared to be pitting. The watch had been fully serviced by a company whose name started with a "Z" but I can't remember the name.
Case between lugs has no pitting and serial/reference numbers are clearly visible. There is the slightest ding on underside edge of the case on the 9 o'clock side which is hardly noticeable but worth calling out. pitting is seen in some cases, and attributed to the metal and/or the wearer’s job/sweat. Many cases are perfectly clean, some are pitted so badly they’re welded shut.
